Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Hitchhikers Guide Movie on DVD

The movie is available on DVD from September 5th 2005 (13th in the US). BUY IT NOW AT AMAZON!

I believe it features Martin Freeman among others on the audio commentaries, as well as deleted scenes, ‘really deleted scenes’ and lots of other stuff.

The UK edition (right) shows all the cast members, while the US edition (left) appears to feature just Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) and Marvin (Warwick Davis).

Why are you still reading this? Why haven’t you bought it yet?!

HHGG Exhibition at the Science Museum

I’ve got my hands on a one sheet poster, thanks to the kind people at Random House. Click here to see. Okay, so I look like a twat…

Martin at special HHGG movie screening 24/02/05

Prior to meeting the press, Martin (and other Hitchhikers Guide movie cast presumably) will be viewing a special screening of an almost-but-not-quite-finished version of the movie today. Meanwhile, the rest of us will have to make do with the trailer, below:

Hitchhikers Guide Movie Trailer!

Watch the incredible new movie trailer in the following formats:

Quicktime

Real Player

Windows Media

The full screen Quicktime version, while being a hefty 50Mb download, gives you loads of detail and really lets you see how the film is going to look.

Arthur Dent Figurines

Oh dear, it’s finally happened! Martin has now been immortalised in plastic, in the form of his character from the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy movie, Arthur Dent.

You can see details of the figurine here on the manufacturer’s website. (Click the little picture for a close-up).

Perhaps more weird is the cuddly ‘plush’ version that will also be available as part of the movie’s merchandising campaign. Although judging by the nature of some of the emails this site receives I actually think that may become quite a popular item!

Check out the excellent Planet Magrathea site where you can see the page I swiped this image from, which shows the whole range that will be available. (No cuddly Vogon’s for some reason!)

On location with HHGG and John Malkovich 22/07/04

I visited Martin on location with the Hitchhikers Guide Movie again last week. My report has now been cleared by the producers and you can read all about it here.

Hitchhikers Movie Welsh Excursion

Martin and the Hitchhikers movie crew have been in Wales, filming a short location scene. The scene was part of one of those ideas Douglas Adams had for the movie before his death, and it’s quite an interesting plot development I must say.

The wind was apparently howling through the rocky location, with the crew shivering in their puffa jackets… Martin, meanwhile, had to stand around in traditional Arthur Dent costume! Oh well, you’ve got to suffer for your art, that’s what I say (although I suspect he had some Hollywood-grade thermals on underneath).

Babel Fish, the game

Welcome to our stupid little game, ‘Babel Fish’. You can play it, exclusively, here:

I was lucky enough to visit the HHGG set the other day. Read about it here.

Martin’s first week on set

After two weeks of rehearsals (and months of design and pre-production work), the movie actually started production last week (19-04-04). Martin had so far enjoyed rehearsing his role as Arthur Dent in London along with the other cast members.

Filming – which doesn’t follow the cronology of the script – got under way with the party scene where Arthur meets Trillian. I can’t give too much away, but those of you who know the book won’t be too surprised by what happens at the party.

Incidentally: it was the party scene that Martin screen-tested with Zooey Deschanel (Trillian), using show-room dummys to stand in for the other party goers.

For Martin the beginning of the week was marred by intense headaches. (The Nurofen sort, not as in ‘problems’ – it all went very well.) Trouper that he is, the show went on, and luckily for him the schedule meant that he was off for the rest of the week. He’s feeling much better now :-)

But Arthur has dark hair, Freeman’s fair!

If you saw Martin at the BAFTAs you might have noticed his hair was not his usual Mod styling, nor even his usual colour – a clue to Arthur’s appearance? Ah well, he assures me he has plenty of hats to wear for the next four months.

Interview with Nick and Garth

Well, not here, but on the excellent Magrathea site. They’re ever so nice about Martin… ahh!

John Malkovich (being Humma Kavula)

Martin will be working with the legendary John Malkovich who will be playing Humma Kavala.

Okay, so you don’t recall that character in the books, but it was created by Douglas Adams specially for the film adaptation. The character is something to do with the Great Green Arklesiezure story, and the description of his physical appearance sounds incredible – Malkovitch will fit the character like a glove. (I could describe it to you, but then I’d have to kill you.)

Mostly Harmless

Martin and Bill Nighy (playing Slartibartfast) have been immortalised on the cover of the latest edition of Mostly Harmless, the magazine of HHGG appreciation society ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha.

I’ve moved the Hitchhikers movie links to their own page, here.
